Studies are now showing that the use of opioids can increase your risk for heart disease!
In a study, scientists collected data between the years of 1999 and 2012 on nearly 23,000 patients who were prescribed opioids for pain. Another group of equal size, given non-opioid pain medications, undertook the same study. The opioid group was found to face a 64% increase in the risk of death due to heart disease. This is due to the observation of new or worsening heart conditions. The opioid group was also observed to have a 65% increase of other harmful health conditions, as well. This finding is a little over double the percentage of the non-opioid group ─ in both cases.
Doctors and heart specialists are saying that the use of opioids should be last resort. This is especially true for those who are prone to heart conditions such as high blood pressure, clots and heart attacks. Those with diabetes are also at risk for heart disease when they use opioids.
If you would like to read more about this study, the findings are available in the June 14, 2016, edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
