Zen Sports Pain Relief Balm products, invigorate the human body, reduce pain, & encourage a natural state of wellness. When an injury occurs in the body, the nerves create a type of pain message. These messages flow along the spinal cord and up to the brain.

When these gates are open, pain messages “get through” easily, and pain can be intense.
When these gates are closed, pain messages are prevented from reaching the brain and may not be experienced at all.
For example, after hitting one’s elbow or head, rubbing the area seems to provide some relief.
This motion activates additional sensory nerve fibers, which send information about pressure and touch through the body.
When arriving at the brain, they override some of the pain messages it’s been receiving.

Ingredients

Peppermint Oil


Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint and is native to Europe. Historically, the herb has been known for its medicinal uses. Its impressively long history often gives it the prestigious title as the world’s oldest medicine.

Peppermint oil is commonly used as a home remedy. By simply massaging the oil on the forehead, or inhaling, the uncomfortable effects of headaches, nausea and motion sickness, are reduced. Part of the reason why it is so successful at relieving headache symptoms is its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. In certain patients a reduction of pain caused by intense migraines was shown within 15 minutes of topical application, according to a study done in 2007.

Like most other essential oils, peppermint is able to provide some relief from stress, and mental exhaustion due to its refreshing nature. Some studies have shown its ability to stimulate mental activity, clear the mind, and increases focus on cognitive tasks.

Peppermint oil is also cooling in nature and is subsequently used to help reduce fever. It is frequently called a “refrigerant”, meaning that it can provide an intensely cold sensation to any affected area. In cases of injury, topically applying peppermint oil to the area has shown to reduce swelling, relieve pain, and eliminate the chances of uncomfortable inflammation. 


CAMPHOR Oil


Camphor essential oil is derived from the camphor tree, which is native to Taiwan, China and Japan and often grows very old. In fact, it must be at least 50 years old to produce the oil. The active camphor component is found in every part of this large tree, which can grow up to 100 feet tall.

Historically, camphor was used in Persia as a well-known remedy against the plague. It was also used by the Chinese to build ships and temples, due to the durable and aromatic properties of the wood.

After many years of use, camphor oil proved to be a very beneficial oil, most commonly in pain relief.

Camphor has cooling, stimulating, and penetrating properties. Giving this diverse oil anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, antispasmodic, and antiphlogistic effects.

Camphor’s stimulant action excites blood circulation, which has been shown to reduce swelling in the body, & give relief to rheumatic ailments such as, arthritis.

Studies have shown camphor’s local anesthetic, and antispasmodic effects (which cause numbness of the sensory nerves at the area of application.) to be extremely beneficial in relieving pain from spasms & muscle cramps, as well as reduction in the severity of nervous disorders, and inflammation. 


Lavender Oil


Like Jasmine oil, Lavender too, is commonly over looked because of its association with scent. Its relaxing, therapeutic effects on the body are astounding.

Lavender oil is derived from the evergreen shrub, which produces beautiful flowers, above green or silvery-gray foliage.

Lavender has been used for over 2,500 years. Ancient Persians, Greeks, and Romans added the flowers to their bathwater to help wash and purify their skin.

There are many beneficial uses of lavender, some of which include, relief of pain caused by eczema & dermatitis, alleviating the symptoms of motion sickness, & soothing dry and chapped skin.

Studies show lavender oil to have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. It also has antispasmodic, analgesic, detoxifying, and sedative effects.


Clove Oil


Clove oil is extracted from a flower bud, known as the clove bud, produced by the evergreen tree. Clove was extensively used in ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations and has since, spread to various parts of the world.

Clove has shown various medicinal properties, one of the reasons being the numerous amounts of anti-inflammatory agents, known as flavonoids, which are naturally occurring in the oil.

Clove oil has been shown to reduce inflammation & tension that so often brings about headaches. For the same reason, clove oil is often used as a pain reliever on other parts of the body, like joints and overworked muscles, to provide relief from painful inflammation or swelling. Clove oil also has a cooling effect & is frequently used to clear the nasal passage. 

Clove oil may also temporarily increase the body’s metabolism, by increasing blood circulation and reducing body temperature. The active compound Eugenol, found in clove has shown to be the responsible party for any circulatory stimulation. This is beneficial because an increase in blood circulation typically means a reduction in tension of the blood vessels. A problem commonly associated with tension headaches, for example. 


Wintergreen Oil

(Methyl Salicylate)


Wintergreen is a tree native to North America. It is believed that many years ago, Native Americans first discovered the use of wintergreen oil to eliminate pain in the muscles and joints.

Methyl Salicylate is a main component of this essential oil. Methyl Salicylate forms an integral part of almost every anti-arthritic and analgesic balm for muscle and joint pain that is available on the market.

When rubbed on the affected area, this oil is readily absorbed through the skin and induces an anesthetic effect on the nerves. It also increases circulation of the blood and brings warmth to the area.

The relaxing and stimulating effect of this oil reduces spasms in the muscular, and nervous systems, while providing relief from muscular cramps and various nervous afflictions.


Cinnamon Leaf Oil


Cinnamon, originated in tropical Asia, and was used most commonly in Sri Lanka and India. Now, the shrub is grown in almost every tropical region of the world.

The herb, owing to its vast medicinal uses, has found a prominent position in traditional medicines, especially in Ayurveda, which is the traditional Indian medicinal system. Cinnamon’s anti-inflammatory properties help in removing stiffness of the muscles and joints, and have been used in many cultures for treating a variety of health disorders including arthritis, menstrual cramps, common cold, & flu.

Recently, another beneficial use for cinnamon oil has been its effective use as a mosquito repellent. Research has now proved that cinnamon oil is very effective in killing mosquito larvae. This research is important, as it has paved the way for finding an environmentally safe solution for reducing the global disease-spreading capacity of mosquitoes.


Nutmeg Oil


Nutmeg oil is obtained from the seed of the nutmeg tree fruit. The fruit, when dried, produces nutmeg (the seed) and mace (the covering). Traditionally, nutmeg was believed to be effective against the plague and hence it was popular during the Elizabethan era.  When it comes to treating various types of inflammation, nutmeg oil is an essential part of Chinese medicine.

Today, due to its healing properties, nutmeg oil is very commonly used for treating muscular and joint pain, and reducing swelling throughout the body. 


Borneol Oil


Borneol is a compound derived from dryobalanops aromitaca, a tree that belongs to the teak family, and is a commonly used ingredient in many traditional Chinese herbal formulas. Borneol has shown various therapeutic properties such as, analgesic, antibacterial, anti-fibrosis, anti-Inflammatory, & antioxidant.

In some cases, studies show borneol’s anesthetic properties to rival, the commonly used drug lidocaine.

Another benefit of Borneol is its ability to potentiate the effects of other ingredients, thus increasing their effectiveness, & allowing the body to absorb more and need less.


Jasmine Oil


Jasmine Essential Oil is extracted from the flowers of Jasmine, the night blooming flower, known mainly for its pleasing fragrance. Due to this alluring scent, Jasmine’s many health benefits are often over looked. Traditionally, essences of jasmine were used during birth for its pain-relieving abilities.  Recent studies have confirmed Jasmine oil to be an effective antispasmodic, making it a beneficial aid for muscle pain, stiffness, and sprains.


Menthol Oil


There are many health benefits connected to the use of Menthol, including the relief of aches and pains, muscle spasms & in some cases, inflammation. Menthol has had a long history of use, and for many centuries was primarily used as a flavoring agent. Eventually, it was found to bring effective relief to sore muscles when applied as a massage.


Cassia Oil


Cassia is derived by distillation of the leaves and twigs of the evergreen tree, which is native to China and Burma, where it is commonly known as Chinese Cinnamon.

Chinese healers knew the medicinal uses of Cassia far back in history. It is believed that from them, the medicinal uses of this plant spread to other parts of the world.

Cassia is a circulatory, stimulant substance, which brings warmth to the joints and other parts of the body. By improving the circulation of the blood, many have found relief from uncomfortable conditions, such as rheumatism and arthritis.


Eucalyptus Oil


Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from the fresh leaves of the eucalyptus tree; it is analgesic and anti-inflammatory in nature. Studies have shown, when massaged on the surface of the skin, eucalyptus oil helps to relieve pain and ease stress. It is commonly used on individuals suffering from rheumatism, sprained ligaments and tendons, stiff muscles, aches, fibrosis and nerve pain.

Many also consider eucalyptus essential oil a vasodilator. Meaning, it increases the blood flow around the body by relaxing the blood vessels and allowing more blood to circulate. Because of this action, eucalyptus oil is commonly used to stimulate mental activity and increase blood flow to the brain.
